Griftpark is a park in Utrecht with an unusual history: the site was a municipal gasworks from the nineteenth century into the 1960s, and by the 1980s the soil and groundwater were so heavily contaminated that engineers sealed the worst of the pollution in an underground tank with a vertical wall driven into the clay layer. The park that opened above it in the 1990s is a working piece of environmental infrastructure with lawns on top. Visitors come for the northern half, which holds Kinderboerderij Griftsteede, a free city farm with goats, sheep, pigs, chickens and rabbits, a large playground and a shallow water-play area in summer.
