The Centraal Museum at Nicolaaskerkhof 10 is the oldest municipal museum in the Netherlands, opened in 1838, and it sits in the Museumkwartier wrapped around the medieval convent of Saint Agnes and a set of seventeenth-century former stables. The building alone is half the exhibit, and the collection runs past 50,000 objects. Upstairs, the Caravaggisti gallery is the quiet triumph: Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerard van Honthorst working candlelight and skin in a way that feeds straight into Rembrandt. Then the tone flips in the Rietveld rooms.
